A Win/Win Situation--Updates about my Miss IL journey and regarding the future..

Hello everyone! It's hard to believe it's been over a month since Miss Illinois week..it's definitely time to update and share about my experience and the results of Miss Illinois 2010.

I arrived in St. Charles on June 16 and after all of the contestants had checked in, we had rehearsals for the production numbers and walking patterns. Thank you to our choreographer, Karen Bloom, for being patient with us as we learned the dances! They were a lot of fun! Also, thank you to the talented Extreme Dance Force team who performed with us on the final night!

During the week, I had a lot of fun with many of the girls. There were a lot of laughs and inside jokes, we helped each other out, and we were there for each other. I really appreciated that and look forward to staying in touch with many of you!

It was such a thrilling feeling when the curtain went up and we were on stage for the first time of Miss Illinois 2010! My first competition was talent--90 seconds and worth 35%! I performed "Impromptu in C Sharp minor" by Reinhold, which is a very sentimental piece in my family. My grandmother played this piece in the 1940s and taught it to my mom. When was little, I loved listening to my mom play it and was definitely inspired by it, with the exciting, fast runs and the slower, expressive section in the middle. I began to learn parts of it by ear even before I began taking piano lessons at age 7. So, it was really special to perform this at Miss Illinois. I wore a one-of-a-kind custom designed gown made for me by fashion designer Miranda. She had always wanted to make a dress for the piano and generously offered to make one for me. I think that it turned out beautifully and am so thankful to her!! The dress is a beautiful iridescent purple color with a V-neck and V-back. There is a rhinestoned belt at the waist and a big train at the back that flows over the piano bench.

I also competed in Evening Gown, which is worth 20%. My dress was a beautiful, rich, royal blue at the top which fades into a lighter blue at the bottom, and the gown has a sparkly tear drop accent in the center of the neckline that connects into one shoulder strap, so it looks asymmetric. I really enjoyed walking the runway during the evening gown competition that night!

Afterwards, I got to see my family, Rachel, and a family friend, Maria Millen--thank you for coming to support me! After a short visit, it was time to get some much-needed sleep--Miss IL week is full of early mornings and late nights with a lot going on each day.

There were several times during Miss IL week for the Miss contestants to interact with their princesses. One day, we all played games and had lunch together, which was definitely a fun time for Bella and I to spend some time together, talk, laugh and have fun (and take some photos, of course)! We got to see our princesses rehearse their dance numbers on stage. Bella did a great job! There was also a Princess Luncheon during which we all dressed up and got to crown our princesses on stage with Miss IL and her princess!!
That was definitely a highlight moment for Bella and me. I think she really loves her crown and felt very special. The princesses had the opportunity to be on stage on Friday and Saturday nights...and I loved seeing Bella in her beautiful white dress after the pageant was over!

Each contestant has a private, 10 minute interview with the panel of judges, which is worth 25%. I had the first interview on Friday morning at about 8:30am. I've been mentally preparing for the job of Miss IL as well as staying up to date with current events, my opinions about them, and being knowledgeable about Children's Miracle Network, Character Counts, and my personal platform "Redefining Success: Using Your Talents to Serve Others," so I felt very prepared and really felt confidant about how the interview went. In fact, I love the interview portion!

On Friday night, I answered my On-Stage Question, which dealt with platform and how I've applied that in my own life as a pianist. This phase of competition is worth 5%. I wore my interview dress and felt confidant about my answer. Then, I competed in Lifestyle and Fitness, worth 15%. I wore a black monokini swimsuit and really felt great about it. I have worked so had on improving this area of competition, so I was definitely proud of myself! After I got off stage, it was a very emotional moment for me. A huge thank you goes to my director's boyfriend Leo, who is a personal trainer and worked with me to teach me some very helpful exercises. Also, I want to give a shout out to The Workout Company in Normal, IL. I am a part-time employee there, so I have really taken advantage of their amazing facility, including group classes. I have had such positive experiences there! For more info, please visit their website: http://www.theworkoutcompany.org/

On Saturday morning, all of the contestants helped out with the Golf Outing at Pheasant Run. Thank you to Glenn Schwerdtmann for organizing this! It was definitely funny to watch some of us (try to) hit the golf ball...I'm even a bad mini-golfer! Haha!

Finally, it was Saturday night..the night we'd all been waiting for. The music started and we performed our opening number and introductions one last time. Then, it was time for the announcement of the Top Ten Finalists...and I was so excited to be the fifth contestant called! I was thrilled and honored to be part of such a talented, intelligent, beautiful group of young women who were the best candidates for the job and title of Miss Illinois for a second year. We all rushed back to our dressing rooms to get ready for the next phase of competition. There were so many people who offered their help to us with changes and anything we needed. I really appreciated that! I loved walking out in my talent dress and performed my heart out, savoring the moment. Then, I had fun in Lifestyle & Fitness, and enjoyed my time on stage in my evening gown. After we all performed the final number, the Top Ten stepped forward, and I heard 5 other names announced as the Top 5 finalists. I can't pretend that I wasn't extremely disappointed. In that moment, my opportunity for the title was no longer available and I experienced so many emotions because I now knew and the pageant was over for me.

However, I also knew all along that I was in a win/win situation--this year, my Miss IL journey coincided simultaneously with another journey, one filled with it's own share of obstacles, questions, waiting, hoping. After my sophomore year at Manhattan School of Music in NYC, I came home and was not able to go back due to financial struggles. This was an extremely difficult time for me for many reasons. I had a lot of confusion and questions about the future. But I didn't give up. Ted and Donna Loy, family friends from church, introduced me to Wheaton College, which has a Conservatory of Music. From my first visit to Wheaton on, I fell in love with it and felt that God wanted me to be there, if only he would provide a way. I prepared for my audition, and it was a success. After months of waiting, I learned that I was accepted as a transfer student...and was absolutely overflowing with thankfulness at the sum of money offered to me in grants and scholarship!!! Praise the Lord! They made it financially possible for me, and the scholarship money I have won through Miss IL and prelims have also helped me pay off loans/school. So, although my dream of becoming Miss IL did not come true this summer, I am celebrating the opportunity to continue my education and be a student again at an amazing school, and I can't wait to start! I have already met some wonderful people there, so I look forward to building relationships as I grow in my relationship with Jesus, as a musician, and however else. I'm so grateful for this blessing and reminder of God's faithfulness, perfect timing, and guidance in my life.

After the pageant, I was so grateful to see the people who came to support me at the reception--my parents, Grandpa and Grandma, Aunt Diane, Aunt Sharon, Tracy and Bella, and Rachel and her mom. I felt so thankful that you were there to share that night with me and I love you all. Thank you so much. Also, although I didn't get to see them afterward, I'm so glad that my friend Tammy Renee' drove all the way from Flora, IL to come to the pageant! It really meant a lot to me.

Thank you to Marta, Lana, and all of the wonderful hostesses, as well as all of the security guards and the production team. Also, thank you to Pheasant Run Resort and the Dellora Norris Center, as well as all of our Miss Illinois sponsors, Michelle Holmes (http://pageantroom.com/), Limelight Studio Photography, our emcees, guest performers, and judges. Last but certainly not least, thank you to Amalia and Glenn Schwerdtmann, the Miss IL board members, and all of the local directors. Without everyone (and probably more!) listed above, it would not be possible to run this great organization. Your time, dedication, and hard work is so appreciated!!

I am more determined than ever to pursue my goal of becoming Miss IL. The longer I am involved in the Miss America Organization, the more I have grown and learned. This is something I believe is very valuable, and I will continue to work hard, compete, and represent the ideals of this organization.

Best wishes to Whitney for her year of service as the new Miss Illinois!!

One Week!!!

The Pawnee Prairie Days Pageant was held today in Pawnee, IL, which is in the Springfield area. I was one of three judges who scored the adorable little girls and boys according to appearance and charm/personality, as well as choosing the 'most photogenic' contestants. They were all adorable, and it was a fun event. I almost wished I would have had another outfit with me so I could have ridden some of the rides at the carnival! Thank you to Jenny Thomas, who organized a great pageant and invited me to judge.

I also picked up my dresses from the seamstress today!! Thank you so much, Mavis! You do great work! I will also be picking up my custom-designed talent gown--I am so grateful for your talent, skill, and generosity, Miranda!! It is gorgeous! Thank you!

In exactly one week, the new Miss Illinois will be crowned and begin her year of service to the people of Illinois and preparing for the Miss America pageant in January 2011.
I'm sure Miss Illinois 2009 Erin O'Connor has mixed emotions about giving up her title--it has been a great year for her. Although I didn't personally see her often this past year, I've been able to keep updated through the Miss IL website. She has grown so much, and it's really been neat to see what she's been able to do with the crown, especially her amazing work to spread her message of awareness of and ways to prevent skin cancer. I know her mother would be so proud. Thank you, Erin, for your dedication and representation of the MISA/MAO. Best wishes for whatever is next!

I am so thrilled that Miss Illinois week is almost here and everything is coming together. It's also going to be such a special time for my princess Bella and me. Thank you so much to my family and friends for their support, especially to mom (thank you for being such a good listener for all my late-night talks) and to my director Rachel for her advice and direction, and thank you, Lord, for this opportunity to pursue my dream and for the way you've blessed me. I feel so prepared, and I've grown so much not only since I began competing but as Miss Capital City. I'm anxious for the wait to be over and to put my whole heart into competing for the job and title of Miss Illinois 2010! Let's do this!

Princess Bella's Dance Recital, Nursing Home

I was so proud to see my princess Bella on stage for her dance recital this weekend! The recital was held at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, and there was a full house! Bella performed in two dances--the first one was to a Hannah Montana song--they really rocked it!--and in the second dance, they wore cute racing outfits and hats.
All the dancers took a group photo after the recital, and when Bella saw me in the audience, she had the biggest smile on her face and it melted my heart to see how excited she was that I was there! It was definitely fun to see Bella doing something she loves, and she did a great job! Her mom told me that she has been asked to join a competition team!

On another subject, the bottom line of my personal platform is using your talents to serve others. I have been a pianist for almost 15 years now! I also love singing, and I played cello for 8 years. Since I am musically-inclined, music has been my means of serving others. I have performed two solo benefit piano recitals to raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital and Children's Miracle Network. When I was in NYC, I also performed for patients of the psychiatric ward of New York Presbyterian Hospital, and it was really a blessing to see how people were moved and appreciated the music.
Performing for and visiting with the residents at local nursing homes and Westminster Village, a retirement community here in Bloomington, is something I've done for years. I really have a heart to spend time with the elderly, share my gift of music with them, and help to brighten their day. During my most recent visit, I was able to see a long-time neighbor, Dora Wilson, (pictured)who is in her late nineties now. It is so important to remember the elderly and reach out to them--and anyone who could benefit from our time and talents. I encourage you to think of ways to reach out to people this summer!

Spring Forum/2010 Miss IL Outstanding Teen and Pre-Teen Pageant

This weekend, I was at the Hoogland Center in Springfield--for Miss IL Spring Forum 2010. It was fun to be back in the venue where I was crowned last November!

All of the contestants met each other, turned in paperwork, went to meetings lead by Executive Director Amalia Schwerdtmann and several Board members, and dance rehearsals to start learning the opening number. Miss Illinois 2009 Erin O'Connor spoke about her experiences, and we also had sessions with Michelle Holmes from The Pageant Room(http://www.pageantroom.com/coaching.php ), Fitness Trainer/Nutritionist Staci Boyer (http://www.motiv8nu.com/), and Brandi Robinson and Lanna Horman from About Face Makeup (http://www.aboutface.limelightstudiophotography.com/) and had mock interviews, which were great practice.

It was also great to see all the hostesses and security staff--I want to thank EVERYONE who volunteer their time to this organization during Spring Forum, Miss IL week, and during the year!! This whole program is successful because of your help.

It was definitely an informative weekend, and it was exciting to find out contestant numbers and roommate assignments--I'm looking forward to rooming with Miss Northern Illinois Lauren Murrell! I'm contestant number 13, so I will be first in the Omega group. I will be competing in Talent and Evening gown for the first night of prelims (June 17) and Swimsuit and On-Stage Question for the second night of prelims (June 18).

I enjoyed going to the 2nd Illinois' Got Talent Competition on Saturday and rooting for Reghan and Summer in the Pre-Teen and Teen pageant on Sunday! I loved your yellow dress, Reghan, and Summer, I'm so happy for you for winning 2nd runner up! I'm so proud of you both, and it was fun to get to hang out this weekend and sit together during the Talent Show. Congratulations to the new titleholders! Pictures and more information about these events are on the Miss IL website.

WOW...Miss Illinois is coming up soon! I can't wait! After my fitting this weekend, the finishing touches are being put on my custom-made talent gown..and I absolutely love it! I'm looking forward to spending the day with my director Rachel tomorrow and going to my Princess Bella's dance recital this weekend! I will be posting a couple more times before the pageant..so please check back and thank you for visiting my blog!

~17 days until Miss Illinois 2010 is crowned!~

Speaking at Rotary Club/Triple Threat Mentoring/Best Wishes to Summer and Reghan!

I was honored to be invited by Roger Schmidgall, a family friend from church, to speak at the Sunset Rotary Club in Normal, IL yesterday on May 26, and I absolutely loved it! Roger kept the club in suspense as to who would be speaking until I arrived--he just said that they would be having a 'surprise royal guest.' Haha! The members were so welcoming and friendly, and my family and I enjoyed meeting them.
I spoke about my title and the Miss Illinois and Miss America Organizations, and played a slideshow of photos as I explained what I've been doing with my title. I focused on sharing about Children's Miracle Network and my personal platform, "Redefining Success: Using Your Talents to Serve Others." It was a great experience, and after I finished, there was a Question & Answer session so I got to interact with the members.
At the end of my senior year of high school, I actually won a Rotary Award, so I know that Rotary members are committed to community service. I thanked them for this and encouraged them to consider my perspective and continue to reach out to others. I felt so supported by this group of people, and I'm thankful to have been a part of their meeting. Their website is: http://www.bnsunsetrotary.org/
After the meeting, Roger and his wife Leah graciously treated us to dinner at Medici Restaurant, which was a fun way to end the night.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Earlier this month, I volunteered at a Triple Threat Mentoring event--Triple Threat mentoring is a program for underprivileged kids in Aurora, IL. It was a cold day, but the kids didn't seem to mind! The main event was a softball tournament with lots of kids from different elementary schools, and kids also had fun playing games and getting their faces painted. I had fun reviving my hula hoop skills with several cute little girls. It was great to see the reigning Miss Illinois Erin O'Connor, who I hadn't seen since the night she was crowned, as well as several other titleholders. Last spring, titleholders also had a chance to interact with the kids who are involved in Triple Threat. It was definitely neat to see how it works and have one-on-one time with them.

I'm glad to be a Triple Threat volunteer because I fully support their mission, method, and impact: (The following information is from their website:http://triplethreat.org/

Children's Miracle Network Benefit!

On Sunday afternoon (May 23), I hosted a Children's Miracle Network Benefit that I organized at Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano. First of all, a big thank you goes to Craig, Kristen, Annie, Tracy, Stephanie, and Chris from Biaggi's for all their help!!! I really appreciated it!

From noon until 2:00 pm, there was a delicious lunch buffet for guests, and at 2:00, I gave a presentation. I spoke about the Miss Illinois/America Organizations, detailed information about the Children's Miracle Network, and the partnership between the two organizations, as well as my visit to St. John's Children's Hospital and other appearances/events I've been involved in during my reign so far. I showed a short CMN video and incorporated a slideshow of my photos as well.

Kaitlyn Paslay, a CMN 'miracle kid,' then shared her story and journey of the past couple years as she continues to battle leukemia. She talked about how this affected her physically, emotionally, mentally, how this has affected her family and her schooling, and the way that CMN and St. John's Hospital have helped her. It was inspiring to hear how she has overcome obstacles and kept a positive outlook. Kaitlyn is a very outgoing, confidant speaker, and I thought she showed a maturity and level of poise beyond her years. A huge thank you goes to Kaitlyn and her family for being my honored guests. It was a blessing to meet and talk with all of them. They have all gone through so much, and I pray that they will continue to see improvements.

After Kaitlyn spoke, she helped me sell raffle tickets and drew tickets for the prizes, which included Children's Miracle Network merchandise (thank you to Dawn Kuhn from CMN at St. John's for bringing these items!) and gift cards from Biaggi's, Rosati's Pizza, and Moe's Southwest Grill, all here in Bloomington/Normal. Thank you so much to these businesses for contributing generously and showing support for CMN. I also want to thank Wal-Mart Bakery for contributing a cake and Growing Grounds for donating carnations.
THANK YOU to everyone who came to the benefit, donated, or was involved in any way! I was so glad that my family and grandparents were there, as well as family friends, friends from church, and my princess Bella and her grandma! I'm so thankful for the generosity that was shown and that I was able to organize an event that will tangibly/financially help CMN and the kids here in Central Illinois. It's great to see how my work as Miss Capital City is having a real impact--I hope everyone is encouraged to know that individuals CAN make a difference and to find ways to serve others in some way.
